5.      PLOT (RESOLUTION)  :

Then the sister washed the girl, and all the burns went away. Now I do see him. He is magnificent.’ ‘What is his bow made of?’ asked Strong Wind’s sister. ‘The rainbow,’ answered the girl. ‘And what is the bowstring made of?’ asked Strong Wind’s sister. ‘Of stars,’ answered Her hair grew long and black again. The sister dressed the girl in fine clothes. Strong Wind came and the girl became his wife. The girls’ two older sisters were very angry, but Strong Wind turned them into aspen trees. Ever since that day, the leaves of the aspen tree tremble with fear whenever he comes near, because they know he remembers their lying and their meanness.

MATERIALS:

Reported Speech (also called Indirect speech is used to communicate what someone else said, but without using the exact words. A few changes are necessary; often a pronoun has to be changed and the verb  is usually moved back a tense, where possible.

• Example:  He said that he was going to come. (The person's exact words were "I'm going to come.")

Present simple, present continuous and present perfect

When we backshift, present simple changes to past simple, present continuous changes to past continuous and present perfect changes to past perfect.

'I travel a lot in my job.'

        •Jamila said that she travelled a lot in her job.

'The baby's sleeping!' 

        •He told me the baby was sleeping.

'I've hurt my leg.'  

        •She said she'd hurt her leg.

Past simple and past continuous

When we backshift, past simple usually changes to past perfect simple, and past continuous usually changes to past perfect continuous.

'We lived in China for five years.' 

        •She told me they'd lived in China for five years.

'It was raining all day.'

         •He told me it had been raining all day.

Past perfect

The past perfect doesn't change.

'I'd tried everything without success, but this new medicine is great.' 

        •He said he'd tried everything without success, but the new medicine was great.

No backshift

If what the speaker has said is still true or relevant, it's not always necessary to change the tense. This might happen when the speaker has used a present tense.

'I go to the gym next to your house.' 

       •Jenny told me that she goes to the gym next to my house. I'm thinking about going with her.

'I'm working in Italy for the next six months.' 

        •He told me he's working in Italy for the next six months. Maybe I should visit him!

'I've broken my arm!' 

        •She said she's broken her arm, so she won't be at work this week.

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi announced the first Corona case in Indonesia, Monday 2 March 2020. There were two people who tested positive for the Corona virus. Both were mothers and children. "His mother is 64 years old and her 31-year-old daughter made direct contact with Japanese guests and tested positive for the Corona virus, "Jokowi said on Monday.

Jokowi said, the case of Corona virus entry into the country was revealed after there were reports of Japanese citizens who tested positive after visiting Indonesia. The government then traced who was in contact with the Japanese citizen.

The government then sought to prevent the spread of the Corona virus in Indonesia. For example, by guarding 135 entrances to Indonesia, whether by land, sea and air.
